Meta, the company behind platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, has announced that it will abandon its content moderation model, and instead adopt a system of 'Community Notes' in the United States, a protocol similar to that imposed by Elon Musk on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.
The company points out that this change will allow "greater freedom of expression" by lifting the restrictions currently imposed on topics that "form part of general discourse." The founder of Facebook even shared a video in which he personally explains some of the changes that these social networks will undergo. "It's time to return to our roots around free expression," Zuckerberg said.
This measure is part of a series of changes that the company is undergoing in the US, coinciding with the return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the North American nation on January 20. For example, the company named the executive Joel Kaplan, linked to the Republicans, as the new head of policy for the group. In addition, Menlo Park announced that Dana White, John Elkann and Charlie Songhurst will join the company's board of directors.
The tech giant's decision has been seen by many as a move to mark an improvement in relations between Meta and Donald Trump. In the past, Trump openly criticized the company's approach to political content, and even threatened the company with imprisoning Zuckerberg for "conspiring against him in 2020."
What does Meta's change mean?
Meta's decision to eliminate fact-checkers has raised numerous concerns, as CNN points out, this change will alter the way posts are moderated within the company's social networks.
The new "Community Notes" would be generated by the users themselves, in a system similar to the one already applied in X by Elon Musk. The company noted through a statement that these notes "will require agreement between people with a variety of perspectives to help prevent biased ratings."
Zuckerberg in Europe's crosshairs and the company's future
Now, the European Commission is warning Mark Zuckerberg not to end the fact-checking program in Europe, and if he were to fire his fact-checkers in the EU, as he announced yesterday he would do in the United States, he would first have to submit a risk assessment to the European Commission, as stated by an EU spokesperson.
