Google removes more than 200 malicious apps with millions of downloads: check if you have them on your phone

The apps had the Joker malware, a computer virus that subscribes victims to premium billing services. A large part of Spanish users have a mobile phone with the Android operating system and, to enjoy social networks or other existing services, these people turn to the Google application store to download any app. Generally, the Play Store monitors that malicious platforms do not enter, but cybercriminals know how to manage to introduce applications with malware to steal personal and banking data. A recent case is the one detected by the security firm Zscaler, in which the Play Store has hosted more than 200 malicious apps to spread the Joker malware in the last year, a computer virus that subscribes users to premium billing services. Although these applications have already been removed from the store, more than eight million downloads were recorded because they were passed off as legitimate ones with useful services, such as a PDF or QR code reader or to edit photographs. According to the Zscaler report, the 'Tools' category accounts for 47.9% of incidents, personalization apps account for 15.2%, photography apps for 11.1%, productivity apps for 6.9%, lifestyle apps for 4.6%, entertainment apps for 3.7%, communication apps for 3.2%, health apps for 2.8% and design apps for 1.8%. Likewise, the Joker malware was present in 38.2% of the apps analyzed, could access contacts and was able to subscribe those affected to premium services.
