The arrival of AI Overviews, followed by AI Mode, was a revolution for those of us who rely, to a greater or lesser extent, on organic traffic. Once the initial phase of ridicule surrounding Google's new technology's inability to correctly answer simple questions (or, frankly, its failure to recommend adding glue to your pizza) subsided, both formats settled in as two sides of the same coin: a new search experience where the classic list of ten organic results mattered less and less, and answers tended to be provided from an automatically generated zero position. Now, these two sides of the coin are merging into what Google has dubbed "seamless search." Or, as Mecano would say, a two-faced picture. This is Google's new seamless search. For some months now, Google has already been facilitating the transition between the two models. As you can see in the image above, users who received an AI Overview—one of those AI-generated answers to their search—had the option to expand their knowledge on the topic and ask more elaborate questions in natural language by clicking the "Drill into AI Mode" button at the bottom or via the top menu, where "AI Mode" was listed first. But it seems that wasn't enough: as Google explains in its announcement, "People turn to Search for a wide range of questions, sometimes to quickly find information, like a sports score or the weather, where a single result is sufficient. But for complex questions or tasks that require delving deeper into a topic, you should be able to seamlessly access a powerful conversational AI experience." What will happen in the coming days is that users will be able to "easily ask a follow-up question directly from an AI Overview and jump into a back-and-forth conversation with AI Mode." According to Google, their testing shows that people prefer "an experience that flows naturally into a conversation," and that asking follow-up questions while maintaining the context of AI Overviews makes Search more useful. This is precisely one of the advantages of this system, where the search engine remembers what you've already asked. You don't have to retype the entire context. You simply continue talking to Google to delve deeper into the topic, without clicking any buttons. You just need to use the text box that appears with an "ask anything" option. In other words, you can essentially jump from an Overview to AI Mode without having to click any special buttons. Simply continue the logical flow of your thoughts, "no matter how long or complex it may be, and find exactly what you need." Furthermore, Google has explained that it has made Gemini 3 the new default model for AI Overviews globally, which will improve the accuracy and quality of the answers provided. We'll leave for another time the biggest fear in the content sector, a fear that has been growing with each new Google development in this area. What will happen to the CTR, so heavily impacted by these changes? If users jump indiscriminately from an Overview to an AI Mode Chat, when will they ever click on the source website?

This launch comes just as the platform has been accused of allowing Meta to read WhatsApp chats. What ar...
