In May 2024, Google began a new era in search by launching AI Overviews in the United States. A year later, thanks to a study conducted by the SEO platform BrightEdge, we can understand the impact of Google's AI-generated views, how they have transformed search, and their implications for website results. Although AI Overviews weren't introduced in Google Search in Spain until March 2025, understanding their evolution in the United States gives us a glimpse into the near future of SEO in our market. As we always tell you, marketers, being ahead of the curve and being prepared is essential for success. Impressions grew by 49%, but CTR fell by 30%. Contrary to what some anticipated, searches have not decreased due to AI-generated views; they have actually increased. Users are making more varied and frequent queries. According to the study, since the implementation of AI Overviews in the United States, Google search impressions have increased by 49%. However, the click-through rate has not followed suit and has decreased by 30%. This means that, although people are more active in searches, many of their queries are covered by the information provided by AI Overviews. This new reality poses challenges around traffic acquisition, highlighting the need to adopt content strategies that focus on the value and depth of information, as well as strengthening the authority of your website. Furthermore, working on GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) will also be essential to achieve citation by AI Overviews. Healthcare, Education, B2B Technology, and Insurance: Dominant Sectors Google does not apply AI-generated views equally to all types of searches, nor to all sectors. If we talk about those sectors where AI Overviews are most prevalent, we must mention the areas of Healthcare, Education, B2B Technology, and Insurance. Education and Healthcare stand out in particular, as, in May 2025, 87% of searches related to these sectors on Google displayed AI-generated results. Meanwhile, the adoption of AI Overviews in B2B Technology searches grew from 36% to 70% in one year. Meanwhile, in Insurance, it increased from 17% to 63%. Content related to these sectors is typically characterized by being factual, explanatory, and structured. These aspects are conditions that tend to increase the chances of being cited by an AI, so if you work in any of these areas, creating content that meets these standards will be a good GEO strategy. Longer and Complex Queries on the Rise The arrival of AI Overviews has given Google Search the ability to better understand complex and detailed searches. This isn't quite comparable to the lengthy queries you can post to ChatGPT, but it has opened the door to being more natural when interacting with the search engine. Google's AI-generated views are increasingly being displayed for long, detailed queries that, in the past, the search engine wouldn't have returned rich results. The frequency with which AI Overviews are generated for searches with eight or more words has increased sevenfold since the launch of this feature. Significant increases have also been seen for long-tail queries of four words and five to seven words.
