Meta controls several of the world's most popular social media platforms, and its power and reach, far from stagnating, continue to grow. This is reflected in the latest user data shared by the company, which reveals that Meta's family of platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, and WhatsApp) now boasts an average of 3.58 billion daily active users (DAP). Meta's daily active users increased by 7% year-over-year. Comparing Meta's 3.58 billion daily active users in the fourth quarter of 2025 with the figure for the same period in 2024 (3.35 billion), we can see a 7% year-over-year increase. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the number of daily active users increased by 1.19% compared to the previous quarter, representing a slight slowdown (1.72% between Q2 and Q3). Meta hasn't shared the exact breakdown of daily active users per social network, so it's not possible to know how activity is specifically distributed across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp separately. What we do know is that, approximately, and in Mark Zuckerberg's words: Facebook and WhatsApp each have more than 2 billion daily active users. Instagram is "just below that." If you're wondering how adding up the figures for each social network results in a number higher than Meta's daily total (3.58 billion), don't worry. It's due to the company's complex way of presenting its results. Many of those millions of people use several apps on the same day. For example: If you use Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram today, Meta counts you as 1 person in the total (out of 3.58 billion). However, in the individual statistics, you count as 1 daily user on Facebook, 1 on WhatsApp, and 1 on Instagram. If you added up the users of each app independently, the figure would be close to 6 billion, but since almost everyone who uses Instagram also uses WhatsApp or Facebook, the actual number of unique users drops to 3.5 billion. On the other hand, we can infer that Threads is playing a significant role in this growth. According to data from Similarweb, by the end of 2025, Threads had surpassed the threshold of 145 million daily active users (45 million more than in December 2024). Threads' impressive growth figures make sense given that it's the youngest member of the family (it will be three years old in 2026), and it will most likely help offset the natural stagnation of other more established platforms like Instagram or Facebook, which have much less room for growth.
WhatsApp has announced the launch of a new update that will make your experience on the app more secure: Strict Account Settings. This feature is a direct response to the sophistication of current cyberattacks, which, although infrequent, represent a real threat to high-risk profiles such as journalists, public figures, and company executives. This launch comes just as the platform has been accused of allowing Meta to read WhatsApp chats. What ar...
